Huai Chomphu — the ‘Pink Valley’ — is named after the cherry blossoms of Chiang Rai. The people here are of the Akha Hilltribe, descendants of southern China who traditionally grew rice, maize, and tea. Around 500 families of the Akha cultivate coffee today, and it has become a staple crop for their livelihoods in recent decades. The lot is a combination of local and foreign cultivars and hybrids, some arriving in Thailand in the ’80s.
